When I started writing this post, I was sitting on a train from Granada to Madrid. I had spent the last two days in Sierra Nevada, a National Park in Spain known for its great ski slopes. The Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) conference for 2011 had its workshops there in December, and I was an invited speaker for the “Machine Learning for Sustainability” workshop. I had a good time there, and look forward to attending this year too.

During the 40 hours that I was in Sierra Nevada (yes, unfortunately it was a short trip), there were talks on many different topics, which was very refreshing for me. Besides talks focusing on energy, the topic I work on, there were talks on global climate models, ecosystem modeling, species conservation and water monitoring. Overall, it was a well organized event that shows promise.

At the end of the day, it seemed as if there were basically two main things that could be improved for next year’s version of the workshop: (a) better advertisement and (b) clearly define a few interesting problems in sustainability along with the challenges they pose to the machine learning (ML) domain, so that more people from the ML community can join in.

The first issue I am battling by writing about the workshop here. I will attempt to address the second issue by summarizing my talk on another post later. I spoke about “Machine Learning Challenges in Building Energy Management”. For now, however, I will leave you with some pictures of Sierra Nevada and La Alhambra, as well as with the following thought: are the carbon emissions associated with a transatlantic flight to a sustainability conference in any way less harmful? A positive answer would help me feel better about myself.

Qué grata sorpresa es encontrar en el bolsillo la servilleta en la que quedó plasmada una noche después de unas copas.

Esta dice:

Duende esperanzador,
 delirio de estrellas
 descubre pronto el dolor que
                nos domina,
 la lluvia de ayer
 mi calma y quimera.
 Resuelve el huerto
 que hay detrás
 de todo aquel
 que no espera.
 Devuélveme
      diestro
         descansado
             dardo del pasado
 para clavarme en nuevos corazones.

Viaje a La Isla

2011/09/29

en Arts

Este post suena mejor en versos:

En nueve días estaré en la isla.

Cuando sea viernes, la semana próxima,
estaré viajando hacia el calor de los calores,
hacia el húmedo y salado aire
de Santo Domingo,
ciudad capital,
tierra de los taínos (allá hace tanto)
y de los que sobrevivieron
al sarampión, a la viruela,
al sancocho que resultó
del encuentro entre hemisferios.

En nueve días estaré buscando
los abrazos del caribe,
la cercanía de la muerte y
la sublevación de las sirenas.

Quien quiera acompañarme,
que me llame.
Estaremos allá por ocho días,
arrancando con una boda
y terminando no sabemos dónde.

Ya quiero llegar.
Esta lejanía de cariño siempre cansa;
tal y como cansa la barbarie
y la indiferencia.

En nueve días estaré en la isla,
recuperándome del Norte
y sus rectángulos.

San Diego

2011/09/17

Irene in NYC

[:es]Ruta del Huracán Irene[:en]Path of Hurricane Irene

It’s been a very long day.

I woke up to this morning’s thunderstorm, close to 5:30am. I had slept very little, because of trying to complete certain things before leaving to New York this weekend (we’re going to meet with two good friends).

At around 6:50 I was already at the office, ready to attend a thesis proposal for which I’m part of the committee. The day went by without much novelty aside from the events that were planned for the orientation days for new students. Classes will start on Monday, and the lack of silence in the hallways is starting to be missed.

I came back home at 8pm, and we decided to prepare gazpacho with the tomatoes that we got from the CSA. Very good idea.

After dinner, the laundry, and some clean up. And while I wait for the dryer cycle to finish, a little bit of time to write and reflect on the day.

Tomorrow we leave on the 4:15pm flight, and everything seems to point to us experiencing hurricane Irene in New York during the weekend. We may loose one of the flights, and so we will need to rent a car, and drive in the rain, and tell each other stories for 6 or 7 hours, and miss home, and think about how much it was all worth the hassle. All of that.

At least in New York I can get dominican sancocho, which goes very well with the rain.

And speaking of the rain, this morning when I woke up I went straight to the guitar and recorded this clip below. Since it was raining, I also recorded the sound of the rain and mixed both things. I apologize for the untuned, six a.m. voice:

I love traveling. New environments are wonderful food for my brain. Thankfully, my job allows me to do that quite often. Sometimes more often than what I would like.

I am not always looking forward to the next trip because, you see, traveling is best enjoyed with someone else and, unfortunately, it is not always possible to take your wife and/or friends with you wherever you go.

So for those of you who know the experience and are looking for suggestions, I offer some words of advice:

It never ceases to amaze me how wide and spread out this country is. Coming from an island that is smaller than the state I am living in makes all the distances look gigantic (La Hispaniola has ~76,000 square kilometers, and Pennsylvania 119,000 according to Wikipedia).

Today I drove four hours into the middle of Pennsylvania, through Route 28 and I-80, to arrive at Lewisburg, PA and attend a workshop on teaching engineering courses. The drive through Route 28 is a bit less boring than I-76, but the middle of Pennsylvania is very dull if you are not hiking, fishing or doing any other outdoor activities. Some people say that Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Alabama in between. Not having been to Alabama yet, I can’t confirm this, but I suspect it’s not far from the truth.

The highlight of the trip was a quick stop at a small restaurant in Brookville, which had 100% favorable reviews in Urbanspoon. After my visit that number went down by a couple points, though. Yet, the ingredients were real, the service was good and the restaurant seemed nice. I would still go for it again to avoid chain restaurants and other establishments which I can find elsewhere.

Anyway, I’m here until Friday and now it’s time to get some sleep.

Amsterdam, Amsterdam

Thumbnail image for Amsterdam, Amsterdam
