Does Cell Phone Radiation Worry You?

2011/06/04

in General

Electromagnetic radiation from cell phones does not worry me, yet. At least not until somebody demonstrates causation (instead of just correlation) and then explains to me the mechanisms that would make it possible. Could it be too late? Sure, but if so, I should have stopped using it long ago. Plus, my cell phone use has been shifting from phone-on-ear to phone-in-hand after getting a smartphone.

Following the recent announcement by the World Health Organization, I have been keeping a couple of tabs open on my browser with some articles I want to read. Needless to say, I haven’t found the time to do this so I’m sharing them with you in case you are interested:

  • A short IEEE Spectrum article. [link]
  • A longer article by The New York Times. [link]
  • Brain cancer statistics since 1975, by the Brain Cancer Institute. [link] (Thanks @denisparra).
  • Wikipedia article on Glioblastoma multiforme, the type of cancer the study finds most relevant as supporting evidence. [link]
  • “Cellular phone use and brain tumor: a meta-analysis”, a meta-analysis study finding no evidence. [link, pdf behind paywall]
  • “Epidemiological evidence for an association between use of wireless phones and tumor diseases”, a 2009 scientific article supporting the claim. [link, pdf behind paywall]
  • “Effects of Cell Phone Radiofrequency Signal Exposure on Brain Glucose Metabolism”, a very recent scientific article demonstrating how brain metabolism can be affected by cell phone usage. [link]

This post is a self-reminder to write a lengthier post on the topic if time permits.

Update (06/07/2011): There is a new article at the NYT that tries to summarize the findings so far.
